Today is the last day of 2024. On this final day of the year, I’m writing a summary of the year (better than nothing). I thought of doing this on the subway after work, and suddenly found it quite hard to start. So, I Googled how others write their year-end summaries. After reading some titles, I too decided to follow the cliché and write from various aspects.
Blog Setup
In November this year, I migrated my blog to Hugo, mainly for its static page generation. The combination of local storage and Github gives me peace of mind. However, the blog posts I wrote in Typecho over the past two years didn’t get migrated and are left sitting on my local machine, gathering dust. I don’t plan to migrate them either ( 😂😂😂 after all, no one is reading them ). So, I’m starting fresh. For me, a blog is both a knowledge management tool and a journal. I write whatever I want to output, without any restrictions.
Q: Many people criticize your technical articles, saying they have many mistakes. What do you think?
Ruan Yifeng: I’ve always been an outsider and never dared to call myself an expert. To me, a blog is primarily a knowledge management tool, and only secondarily a tool for dissemination. My technical articles are mainly used to organize knowledge that I don’t yet understand. I only write about things I haven’t fully mastered, and the things I’m already proficient in, I often have no motivation to write about. Showing off has never been my goal; curiosity is.
Work Changes and Feelings
Time flies. Before I realized it, I’ve been at this company for almost three years (just 6 or 7 more months until the 3-year mark). Compared to my previous company, things are much more relaxed here, though I’ve started feeling a bit more stressed (it seems to have started only in the second half of the year). I’m still reflecting on it and won’t go into further detail here. There aren’t many “big tasks” at work; most of it involves tweaking existing projects, managing the quality and workload of outsourced operations, and handling various administrative requests.
Technical Growth
At times, I feel like I’m swamped, but when I look back, I’m not sure what I’ve actually been busy with. I’ve been studying TypeScript for a while, then switching to Python after some time, and then looking at C++ for a period. It feels like I’ve been dabbling without any real progress. I can’t continue like this next year.
Life
This year has been relatively enjoyable. I traveled to several places with my boss: Qingdao, Harbin, the Tianping Mountain in Suzhou to see the autumn leaves, and a hiking trip to the Fahixi Temple in Hangzhou. Additionally, after my health check in December showed some not-so-ideal results (which I had expected, given my tendency to eat and drink without control), I started running in mid-December, and I’ve kept it up since. It feels like I’ve gradually developed the habit of running. Now, if I don’t run for a couple of days, I feel out of sorts. I really enjoy the breathing and whooshing sound of the wind when I’m running; it’s wonderful.

I traveled 4 times in 2024 (I think). While I’m still able to travel, I want to go out more often and hope to unlock some new cities.

Year-End 9 Questions
What did you do this year that you hadn’t done before?
In December, I hiked to the Faxisi Temple in Hangzhou, which got me into hiking. I plan to spend most weekends hiking around Shanghai and its surroundings next year.
Compared to this time last year, are you: happier or sadder? Thinner or fatter? Richer or poorer?
I’m an optimist, and one of my mottos is: “People who smile often won’t have bad luck.” I believe every moment brings growth. Compared to before, I’m definitely happier. As for weight, I’ve gained around 8 kg. As for wealth, I may have spent more this year, but my wallet doesn’t seem any thicker.
Who do you miss?
I occasionally think of my late grandfather, especially when walking through the old alleys in Shanghai. Other than that, not really. I’m the type of person who acts on impulse (really, just a spontaneous person). If I miss someone, I’d just set off immediately.
What’s been your best life experience this year?
The hiking experience at Faxisi Temple in Hangzhou in December — beautiful scenery, always found on the road.
What’s the most memorable thing you bought this year?
AirPods 4 Noise-canceling Edition.
What’s the favorite place you visited in 2024?
Qingdao, Shandong Province. The sea breeze and beer — it was amazing.
What would you like to have in 2025 that you didn’t get this year?
